Your Choices Are A Request

Your Choice

Choice happens on many levels. There’s the choice of what we order in a restaurant or when we’re shopping online. There’s the choice of how we spend our time and where we focus our energy. The choice to move into the unknown and learn something new by challenging ourselves and choosing what was previously unchosen. In every single instance, a choice is a request. A request for what we’ve chosen.

Sometimes it’s simple: I choose chocolate because I know I love it and I want to experience more of it. Or I choose to avoid something by choosing the alternative because I know I DON’T want more of it. Things can start to feel a bit tricky though when we’re unaware that every single human choice has an emotional underpinning. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I’ll say it again: As humans the primary experience we have is that we create through our emotions.

When I lash out in anger I bring to me more anger because I use anger as the fuel for my creation. Most of us don’t consciously think “Ooh, I can’t wait to be angrier!” However when we fly off the handle and let anger command us to action, we in essence have chosen anger and then we have the experience of more anger showing up.
When we feel we are unworthy of something or are incapable of having it, we choose from a place of disempowerment. And then, guess what? We create the experience of receiving more circumstances that support our choice of believing we are powerless and unworthy.

It’s deceptively simple. I’m not saying it’s easy to unlearn old emotional patterns. Learning something new takes focused dedication and conscious practice. The trick is to start by sitting with your emotions. Just let them show up. Let them reveal themselves to you. Feel them. Examine them. Be curious about them. Sometimes this means you gotta step away, take a breath and count to 10. Or 100.

Once you’ve let yourself simply become aware of them, that’s when the choice comes in. The choice to allow yourself to choose something else. Your emotions aren’t the one running the show. Unless of course you choose to let them.
